"This class was really helpful and taught me so much."

This workshop is designed for students who have a serious interest in the art of filmmaking, whether you have experience making films or are new to filmmaking. Our goal is to develop each student's abilities in the areas of writing, directing, shooting and editing through hands-on training.

Films are shot on video and edited digitally. Students begin by learning fundamental concepts and the terms we use when making films. We ask the question 'Why tell stories?' and examine some of the basic attributes of stories that we might all consider to be worthwhile. By watching selected film excerpts that exemplify a variety of techniques, students become aware of elements that have a significant impact on their choices as they shoot and edit their films.

Students learn everything from screenplay terminology to how lighting impacts and sets the mood or tone of a shot. Students develop their interviewing skills and undertake a variety of individual and group projects over the course of the three weeks. Completed films as well as works in progress are shown during and at the end of each session.
