Meet a Student
I really like art and wanted to devote a lot of time to making art. I got to focus on two things which is really nice. Then I came back for a second summer because I had such a great time when I was here the first time!
The teachers are really good and very energetic. I definitely learned a lot. For example, I went into sculpture wanting to make something that looked real, but ended up making abstract sculpture which is really fun. I also learned to weld, which I’d never had the chance to do before.
I really enjoyed my drawing class. The teacher taught me about negative space and to draw what you see not what you know. I worked on my drawing and got a lot better over the course of the two summers I was at Putney.
You really get to focus for hours on what you’re doing and you don't have to break it up. I could be as creative as I wanted without having any restrictions like grades. It’s nice to be able to do what you love to do all day long.
When friends ask me about Putney I tell them that it’s one of the best places because it’s so removed, yet you’re with people all the time. There’s a huge sense of community that’s created and that’s something that usually doesn't happen in just three weeks. Some of the best memories I have are of the friends I made. I'm still in touch with most of them.
I love being outside in the summer so I worked outside a lot. It was great to be able to do the work I love non-stop for three weeks.
